Golf History

In 1916 one of golf's earliest pioneers, Tom Bendelow, designed the original sporty nine hole course at Kankakee Country Club. Among his most famous designs are Medinah C.C courses # 1 # 2 and # 3, Olympia Fields # 2 and South course, Glen Oak C.C., Skokie C.C. and North Shore C.C. to mention just a few of the 150 or more that he designed. In 1963, the golf course was redesigned by John Darrah to utilize the prime river frontage along the Kankakee River and expand the course to 18 holes. The area of the property near the river was remolded into our current signature hole # 17, a very challenging par 5 hole that borders the Kankakee River and is one of the most demanding and picturesque in Illinois. It requires two perfectly placed shots to avoid the river on the left and the lagoon and tree-lined fairway on the right. The front of the green is tightly guarded by the lagoon, bunkers, and mounds behind.  While the course is rather short and tight, it is maintained in superb condition making it an outstanding test of golf for even the finest players. Kankakee Country Club has hosted 2 Illinois State Amateur Championships, numerous County Amateur Tournaments, and annually hosts the Riverside Medical Center Pro – Amateur Championship and other quality events.

The scenic river views and rolling terrain is why Kankakee Country Club is known as the "Jewel on the Kankakee"
